Welcome to my site! I'm Marnie, Jill-Of-All-Trades a.k.a. freelance writer, researcher, proofreader, editor, wedding singer, trainer, cook, and all-around anything. I also dabble in photography during my spare time. Tumatanggap din ako ng luto at linis, pero pwera ang laba at plantsa. :D

Anyway, feel free to look around and explore the inner workings of my not-so-spotless mind. Kick back, relax, have a drink and a chat. Open bar starts at 12. Cheers! :)
Life is a bowl of cherries...

Or so the saying goes. Well, if it is, I'm sure glad I'm not in the pits anymore! :D

My dad bought these on a work trip abroad. As it was my first time to see and taste real cherries, I couldn't resist taking a few pictures. :)

A note on the watermarks: some members of my online group for bakers got victimized by a bogus seller snatching photos off their sites and passing them off as her own, so I decided to take the paranoid route and make my watermarks more obvious. Sorry for the eyesore!

Street Fashion

Submitted these images to my Advanced News Photography professor for our Street Photography project. The theme for the project was street fashion: the more unique, the better. Good thing I ran into these youths on the streets of Marikina Bayan this afternoon. They're all members of a youth advocacy group for culture and the arts, and they were very accommodating the entire time I was shooting. One thing's for sure, they certainly have a unique sense of fashion! :)

The man in the rain coat is a security guard for Sultan Spa near Masinag Market. His ensemble reminded me of a runway look I saw recently, so I asked if I could take his photo as well. :)

I'll be adding more photos to this album later; haven't quite finished editing the rest of the photos yet.

There's A Fine, Fine Line

Been thinking a lot lately about my life and where I want to go. I guess it's time to let go of those things that are not good or not healthy for me, emotionally especially. If only it wasn't so hard. *sigh*

This song is from the Avenue Q musical, and it was sung by Kate Monster after the possibility of true love turned sour for a while. Hope that you guys like it as much as I do.

There's A Fine, Fine Line
Avenue Q

There's a fine, fine line between a lover and a friend;
There's a fine, fine line between reality and pretend;
And you never know 'til you reach the top if it was worth the uphill climb.

There's a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of time.

There's a fine, fine line between a fairy tale and a lie;
And there's a fine, fine line between "You're wonderful" and "Goodbye."
I guess if someone doesn't love you back it isn't such a crime,
But there's a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of your time.

And I don't have t...

You are resistant to schedules and obligations, so you love feeling like you're in control of your life again. You are the very moment when the second hand hits the 12, and the halls fill with noise and motion. Even if your after-school time is packed with activities, lessons, or a job, somehow, you just feel freer in the late afternoon than you do earlier in the day. Maybe it's all that blue sky and afternoon sunshine? Nah -- even on rainy days, 3:15 is always a beautiful time.
Blast From My Past

Hunted up some old photos from my past for a class exercise on important moments in our lives. I had a really hard time trying to find photos, mostly because most of them were damaged or destroyed by rainwater seeping in from the roof, and partly because my room is such a mess. Hehe. Siyempre di ko na isinama yung infamous high school graduation pastillas shot ko, masyado nang nakakahiya yun. Haha.

Forgive the lousy resolution; I just shot these with my digital camera since I'm not lucky enough to own a scanner. I'll try to post a few more photos when I get around to digitizing them.

Love Is A Losing Game

Love Is A Losing Game
Amy Winehouse

For you I was a flame
Love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came
Love is a losing game

One I wish I never played
Oh what a mess we made
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game

Played out by the band
Love is a losing hand
More than I could stand
Love is a losing hand

Self professed... profound
Till the chips were down
...know you're a gambling man
Love is a losing hand

Though I'm rather blind
Love is a fate resigned
Memories mar my mind
Love is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game

Pabalat Making: A Vanishing Tradition

Pabalat, or pastillas wrapper making, is a vanishing tradition in the province of Bulacan where it originated. The intricate art of paper cutting that turns ordinary pieces of Japanese paper into lace-like creations was once a prized skill amongst the old families of the province. Families proudly displayed tall dishes of this sweet treat for the benefit of visitors. With their fancy tails hanging down from the dish's rim and the light shining through the delicate paper, the wrapped candies looked like expensive handmade lace decorations, and were a welcome addition to the family's dining tables.

These days, the last few practitioners of the art are well past retirement age, with very few youngsters willing to take the time to learn the skills required to make the delicate lace. Nanay Luz Ocampo is one of the last remaining women still skilled in this art. Thankfully, two of her grandchildren have finally taken an interest in pabalat making. Nanay Luz hopes that they will continue t...

Goodbye To You

Goodbye To You
Michelle Branch

Of all the things I believed in,
I just want to get it over with.
Tears form behind my eyes
But I do not cry.
Counting the days that pass me by.

I've been searching deep down in my soul.
Words that I'm hearing are starting to get old.
Feels like I'm starting all over again.
The last three years were just pretend.

And I said

Goodbye to you.
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew.
You were the one I loved,
The one thing that I tried to hold on to.

I used to get lost in your eyes,
And it seems that I can't live a day without you.
Closing my eyes and you'll chase my thoughts away
To a place where I am blinded by the light
But it's not right.

Goodbye to you.
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew.
You were the one I loved,
The one thing that I tried to hold on to.

And it hurts to want everything & nothing at the same time.
I want what's yours and I want what's mine.
I want you, but I'm not giving in this time.

Goo...

...with these 1800s-style portraits taken for my History of Photojournalism class. My friend Deeji very kindly consented to pose for this series. I tried to simulate the romantic and painterly poses typical of the era, especially those of Julia Margaret Cameron's portraits. All of these were shot at 1/8 sec. speed or lower with the camera mounted on a tripod, with varying ISO settings. I added layers to make them look aged. Taken on 24 Feb. 2007 at the

"And honestly I might be stupid to think love is love, but I do."

I was rummaging through some old CDs and found a compilation album I made years ago for myself and a few friends. Since I don't make a habit of writing titles and artists on my burned CDs, I'd forgotten most of what was in this compilation, and decided to refresh my memory by giving it a spin. Was pleasantly surprised to find this gem by Aimee Mann on it, she of the Magnolia soundtrack fame. The string arrangement for this song is exquisite and Aimee gives the lyrics a sweet and slightly melancholy quality that makes me smile and breaks my heart at the same time. This song also holds many memories for me of college afternoons sitting outside the Main Library in UPD with my friends and a guitar, singing the day away, all cares forgotten. Good times. Very good times.

Credit goes to Thor for introducing me to Aimee's music (indeed, for introducing me to a lot of good music), and credit goes to Aimee's music for introducing me to Vince. Thanks, you guys. :)

Cheers, friends. Enjoy.

...

Practice Shots: UP vs. FEU, UAAP Women's Football

Covered the UP vs. FEU women's football game at the Ateneo yesterday for a class assignment, so now I have new photos to inflict on those lucky few (ahem! pagbigyan!) who actually read my blog!. Wahehehe! :)

It was my first time to cover a sports event so please bear with the photos. I realized three things at the game. One, I really, really need a new lens. Two, mahal ako ng bola; the ball got kicked in my direction 12 times! Three of those times it was on a direct trajectory towards my head! Buti na lang nakaiwas ako. Weh. Three, the FIFA World Cup just gained another fan. Namaos ako sa kakasigaw, in fairness. Guess my journalistic neutrality just went out the window. Hehe.

Oh, and if you're wondering who won the game, the final score was 7-1 in favor of FEU. Ang lungkot! Di bale, may susunod pa naman. GO UP! Laban!

Rainy Afternoon at the Park

Gigie taught me some new photography tips and techniques last Tuesday morning while I was at the GAIA office; I was eager to practice what I had learned, so that afternoon Jay and I headed for Parks and Wildlife in QC to shoot a few frames.

Parks and Wildlife is in an increasingly neglected state these days; I suppose its funding has gone the way of the dodo since its heyday in the 70s. Still, there were a few interesting sights to see that rainy afternoon. Take note of the vaguely pyramidal wooden stubs connected by nylon ropes: they form part of an installation piece by artist Luis Yee Jr depicting the loss of the country's forests. The wooden stubs, called Angud, were holes cut into freshly felled timber so carabaos could pull them down the mountains to the waiting sawmills. Once at the mills, the Angud would be cut off and used as charcoal.

Chancing upon the Angud installation amidst the park's trees almost makes one's hair stand on end; it feels as if one has stumbled upon...
